IN 2019, DBI SYSTEMS WAS CALLED ON TO PROVIDE A FORWARD-THINKING, INTEGRATED A/V SYSTEM FOR THE NEW WOW LIGHTING CALGARY OFFICE.

Based on experience with their previous system, we were given a mandate by WOW to design and install a powerful system where simplicity, reliability and flexibility in operation were key functions.

For over 63 years, WOW Lighting (RMA & Associates) has been a leader in the field of commercial and performance lighting systems. The WOW office regularly hosts sophisticated design clientele such as architects and designers who expect the latest technology along with impressive visual aesthetics. We accomplished this for WOW by implementing a variety of A/V products including intuitive touch screens, a high-end video projector and a special high-performance conferencing microphone system.

Challenge

WOW’s company culture called for an open concept whereby a showroom could double as a workspace or entertainment space. Each space in the building required a unique, creative approach to achieve a proper balance between performance and visual aesthetics. Based on their business model we decided on a hybrid centralized/standalone design for their breakout rooms.

The WOW offices are not a typical corporate space, and we quickly realized that traditional solutions would not work. The space consists of extremely low open ceilings and glass walls throughout, which prevented the use of standard A/V solutions. Another challenge was designing a system that would accommodate the vastly different technical skill levels among staff. We were also asked that the system be extremely functional and nearly invisible when not in use.

Staff interaction with the system was an important factor in our system design. Intuitive touch screens were used in large spaces, while existing remote controls were used in smaller spaces. Our goal was to create a user experience that was not that different than using a typical A/V system at home.

Solution

Being involved in this project from its inception allowed us to work closely with the client to deliver a superior solution. This project is a great example of how partnering with dbi Systems early in the design process will result in a system that can exceed the owner’s expectations. Even as design changes were continually made throughout the construction process, we were able to be flexible and adapt the design to accommodate all changes.
